On today’s episode of Honest to God, we’re talking about obedience—not to your parents, and not to your boss, but to Jesus. For most of us, the word “Obey” is disturbing; it feels authoritarian and disciplinary, counterintuitive to our freewill. For years, my own assumptions about what it meant to obey the way of Christ kept me from experiencing the fullest extent of His goodness, and it wasn’t until I started deconstructing my experience of institutionalized religion that I discovered the wonder of (and truth about) partnering with God instead of plodding along in total self-reliance and self-righteousness.
As we deconstruct and reimagine our notions of obeying the way of Jesus, we’ll wrestle the inherent logical discomfort and wade into an understanding of how + why a lifestyle aligned with Christ restores and grows us. What we’re not going to do is sugarcoat. Being obedient to God often grates against our nature, asking us to deny impulse and convenience…an impossible task unless you know it isn’t discipline for discipline’s sake. Today, we’ll discuss the difference and figure out the way forward.
