Mike could imagine Aikman serving in some kind of advisory role.

But he doubts Troy would take a meaningful football operations job without real authority.

Rudy takes the conversation in another direction.

Maybe Aikman should take a year off.

After decades of playing football and broadcasting games, perhaps he should experience life without a demanding schedule.

The guys also discuss whether Aikman could eventually return to broadcasting somewhere else.

But for now, neither host expects Troy to become the person who fixes Dallas.

It's the second night of a back-to-back, and the Spurs are clearly feeling the effects of travel and fatigue.

But a win is a win.

And San Antonio has now won three straight.

Still, Mike and Rudy aren't letting Mitch Johnson, Luke Kornet, or the Spurs' half-court offense off the hook.

Why did Mitch hold onto his timeout at the end of regulation? Why is Terrace Reed sitting while Kornet struggles? And how does Carter Bryant fit into a rotation that suddenly looks more like the NBA playoffs than the fifth game of the season?

PLUS, the guys discuss Stephon Castle's offensive limitations, Utah's young talent, the growing NBA injury list, and the Dallas Mavericks crushing the Oklahoma City Thunder.

The Spurs win 117-111, but it takes a whole lot more effort than Mike and Rudy expected.

San Antonio is playing its second game in two nights after beating Sacramento, while Utah comes in rested.

The Spurs establish a lead late in regulation but fail to close things out.

Then overtime arrives.

And everything changes.

Mike and Rudy love the defensive intensity San Antonio brings in the extra period.

The Jazz start forcing difficult shots, and the Spurs finally take control.

Rudy points out that although San Antonio is young, its players have more experience in these pressure situations than Utah.

The Spurs survive.

Three straight wins.

And sometimes that's all that matters.

2. VICTOR WEMBANYAMA IS THE FRANCHISE

Victor Wembanyama finishes with:

The Spurs are a better team when Wemby gets the most shots.

He was terrific through the first three quarters, although the guys notice that he becomes less involved offensively during the fourth.

Rudy believes Wembanyama should be the clear focal point of the offense every night.

He's the franchise player.

He's one of the best players in basketball.

And when San Antonio gives him enough opportunities, good things tend to happen.

3. MITCH JOHNSON SHOULD HAVE CALLED TIMEOUT

The end of regulation gets ugly.

Mike believes Utah commits a shot clock violation that should have given San Antonio a better opportunity to set up a final possession.

Instead, the officials allow play to continue.

Mitch Johnson is furious with Tony Brothers.

But Mike and Rudy question why the Spurs coach doesn't call a timeout.

De'Aaron Fox ends up taking a desperate, awkward shot.

The game goes to overtime.

And the guys are left wondering why San Antonio didn't organize a better final possession.

Rudy gives Mitch credit for repeatedly calling offensive plays for Devin Vassell earlier in the fourth quarter.

But the final sequence?

Not his best moment.

4. MITCH GOES WITH A PLAYOFF ROTATION

Five games into the season, Mitch Johnson is already tightening things up.

Only nine Spurs see the floor.

And Carter Bryant plays just five minutes.

Mike and Rudy describe it as a playoff-style rotation.

Julian Champagnie plays 31 minutes, while Luke Kornet gets 14.

Terrace Reed doesn't play at all.

Mike compares the Spurs' roster to the massive Cheesecake Factory menu.

Too many choices.

Too many combinations.

And maybe Mitch is still trying to figure out what works.

Rudy believes the shorter rotation helps the team focus, but the guys are concerned about what it means for the young players who aren't getting opportunities.

5. LUKE KORNET LOOKS GASSED

Mike and Rudy are not impressed with Luke Kornet.

They question his conditioning, energy, and overall production.

Mike describes Kornet as a traffic cone on defense.

Rudy believes he looks exhausted despite playing relatively limited minutes.

And both hosts think the Spurs need more from their backup big man.

The conversation quickly turns to Terrace Reed.

Why not give the rookie a chance?

Reed has brought energy, rebounding, and physicality in the minutes he's received.

Mike and Rudy aren't saying Reed is already a star.

They just want to see whether he can help.

Especially when Kornet is struggling.

6. FREE TERRACE REED AND CARTER BRYANT

Terrace Reed doesn't play against Utah.

Carter Bryant gets five minutes.

And the guys aren't thrilled.

Mike and Rudy believe Reed has earned more opportunities based on what he's shown in limited action.

They also revisit the Carter Bryant conversation from the morning show.

The concern isn't Bryant's talent.

It's his development.

Mike believes the Spurs have too many players competing for minutes, and Bryant may struggle to find a consistent role.

Rudy argues that young players need meaningful opportunities to improve.

And with Mitch already shortening the rotation, both rookies could face a difficult path to regular playing time.

7. STEPHON CASTLE NEEDS MORE COUNTERS

A viewer brings up an interesting point about Stephon Castle.

Opposing defenses are starting to figure out his preferred offensive move.

Attack the basket.

Slow down.

Use a stutter step.

Get the defender in the air.

Draw contact.

Rudy agrees that Castle is talented enough to make the move work anyway.

But he believes Castle needs to develop more options.

Specifically, a reliable pull-up jumper around 15 feet.

Rudy says the shot is already in Castle's arsenal.

Now he needs to use it.

If Castle wants to become an even more dangerous offensive player, he can't rely on the same move every time.

8. HARPER, FOX AND CASTLE LOCK DOWN

Mike and Rudy love what happens when Dylan Harper, De'Aaron Fox, and Stephon Castle decide to turn up the defensive pressure.

The trio gets physical.

They deny passing lanes.

They force opponents into difficult shots late in the shot clock.

And with Wembanyama protecting the paint behind them, San Antonio becomes a difficult team to score against.

Rudy believes the Spurs' defensive potential is one of their biggest strengths.

The challenge is sustaining that intensity throughout a long NBA season.

9. KEONTE GEORGE GIVES SAN ANTONIO PROBLEMS

The Utah Jazz are shorthanded, but Keonte George catches Mike and Rudy's attention.

The young guard creates offense, makes difficult shots, and keeps the Jazz competitive.

Mike compares his scoring ability to Monta Ellis.

The hosts also discuss Utah's young roster and wonder about some of the team's late-game lineup decisions.

They acknowledge that injuries to Lauri Markkanen and Jaren Jackson Jr. change the matchup significantly.

But George gives the Spurs plenty to deal with.

THE SPURS KILLED THE KINGS, BUT MIKE TAYLOR STILL WANTS SOMEBODY FREED!

Welcome to Episode 669 of In the Building with Mike Taylor and Rudy Jay, live from the Texas Cheer Liquor Studios!

The San Antonio Spurs absolutely dismantle the Sacramento Kings 130-103, but the biggest conversation the next morning isn't about the blowout. It's about Carter Bryant.

Mike believes the talented rookie is getting buried in Mitch Johnson's rotation, and he's reached the point where he'd rather see Bryant traded than watch his development stall.

Meanwhile, Jerry Jones leaves the door open for Troy Aikman to return to the Dallas Cowboys in some capacity. Mike isn't buying it. He's also furious with Joe Buck over how Aikman's broadcasting contract situation has unfolded.

PLUS, Justin Tucker signs with the Kansas City Chiefs' practice squad, Texas football faces another major injury, and People I Want to Punch takes on athletes getting involved in politics.

And because it's Halloween week, Mike brings serial killer talk to the show, including a new development in the Ted Bundy case.

The San Antonio Spurs beat the Sacramento Kings 130-103, and Mike Taylor has a new word for everybody.

REGICIDE.

The killing of a king.

And after what San Antonio did to Sacramento, Mike thinks the Kings should probably find another nickname.

He and Rudy don't have much respect for Sacramento's current direction, questioning the franchise's ownership and its ability to build a winning organization.

The Spurs take care of business, but the guys don't spend much time celebrating.

There's a bigger issue on Mike's mind.

2. FREE CARTER BRYANT!

Mike wants the Spurs to trade Carter Bryant.

Not because he thinks Bryant is a bad player.

Quite the opposite.

Mike believes Bryant is one of the most athletic players on the roster, a talented defender, and a young prospect with legitimate shooting potential.

The problem?

He isn't playing enough.

Mike argues that Mitch Johnson has created an environment where Bryant looks nervous about making mistakes. He believes the rookie is thinking too much instead of playing instinctively.

And with a crowded rotation that includes established veterans, Mike doesn't see a clear path to meaningful minutes.

His argument is simple: If the Spurs aren't going to develop Carter Bryant, let somebody else do it.

Rudy agrees that the roster creates a difficult situation for the rookie.

The guys also compare Bryant's development concerns with how Jeremy Sochan was handled in San Antonio.

Is Bryant already falling into the same trap?

3. COULD TROY AIKMAN RETURN TO THE DALLAS COWBOYS?

Jerry Jones was asked about the possibility of Troy Aikman joining the Cowboys organization in a front-office role.

Jerry had plenty of positive things to say about his former quarterback and didn't completely rule out the possibility.

Mike isn't buying any of it.

He believes Aikman and Jones are too different to work together in a meaningful football operations role.

Why?

Because Troy would probably tell Jerry the organization needs a new general manager.

And that's not exactly a conversation Mike expects Jerry to welcome.

Mike says an ambassador position might be the only realistic arrangement, but he doesn't believe Aikman would be interested in becoming a ceremonial face of the franchise.

4. MIKE WANTS TO PUNCH JOE BUCK

Mike loves Joe Buck as a broadcaster.

But right now, he doesn't think Buck has been a particularly good friend to Troy Aikman.

The guys revisit the contract situation involving the longtime Monday Night Football broadcasting partners.

Mike argues that Aikman deserved better communication from Buck, especially considering their history together.

He believes Troy helped bring Buck into their current partnership and should have received more consideration before Buck made his contract decision.

Mike isn't questioning Buck's broadcasting ability.

He's questioning the friendship.

5. JUSTIN TUCKER JOINS THE KANSAS CITY CHIEFS

Justin Tucker is back in the NFL conversation after signing with the Kansas City Chiefs' practice squad.

Mike and Rudy discuss the move in light of the misconduct allegations that previously surrounded the former Baltimore Ravens kicker.

The hosts question the behavior described in those allegations and compare the situation with the controversy involving Deshaun Watson.

They also wonder whether Kansas City's willingness to bring Tucker aboard reflects the franchise's determination to win.

Mike starts the segment with the Mike Tyson documentary on Netflix.

But he has a confession.

He had to leave the theater multiple times because of a stomach problem, leading to a completely unnecessary discussion about movie theater popcorn, butter, and bathroom emergencies.

10. THE LAST ISSUE AND THE STORY OF LA PRENSA

Mike gives a shout-out to local filmmaker Nick Mary for The Last Issue, a short documentary about the closing of San Antonio's La Prensa newspaper.

The film follows Nina and her family's connection to the longtime bilingual publication during its final days.

Mike says the documentary has received renewed attention and is being shown on PBS in Austin.

He encourages viewers to check out the short film through his Facebook page.

11. THE LT ELECTRIC SLIDE GETS RIDICULOUS

The crew answers three important questions.

How much money would it take to shave off both eyebrows?

What's the greatest ice cream flavor?

And would a Mexico City NBA franchise be a good idea?

Mike says he'd shave his eyebrows for $1,000, while another member of the crew wants $10,000.

Cookies and cream and Rocky Road get plenty of love.

And the guys are surprisingly enthusiastic about NBA expansion into Mexico City.

Mike even suggests relocating the Sacramento Kings.

After what the Spurs did to them, he doesn't think Sacramento deserves the team anyway.

12. SPURS vs. JAZZ POSTGAME COVERAGE

The Spurs head to Utah for the next game, and Mike and Rudy announce another live postgame show.

In the Building Spurs Edition will return immediately after the matchup, presented by Game Day Men's Health Alamo Ranch.

The guys also spend a little too much time debating why a team in Salt Lake City is called the Jazz.

They know the franchise originally played in New Orleans.

They still think the name makes absolutely no sense.

Jerry Jones can say whatever he wants about Troy Aikman returning to the Cowboys, but Mike doesn't see that relationship working.

And the Chiefs bringing in Justin Tucker raises another round of questions about how NFL teams balance talent, winning, and off-field controversy.

THE SAN ANTONIO SPURS ARE BACK IN THE WIN COLUMN!

Victor Wembanyama dominates, Julian Champagnie catches fire from three, and the Spurs absolutely destroy the Sacramento Kings 130-103!

Mike Taylor and Rudy Jay are LIVE with instant reactions on In the Building Spurs Edition, presented by Game Day Men's Health Alamo Ranch.

After a frustrating start to the season, San Antonio delivers the kind of performance fans have been waiting for. Wemby takes over early, Champagnie erupts for eight three-pointers off the bench, and Mitch Johnson gets an opportunity to experiment with his rotations while resting key players ahead of another game tomorrow night.

But even after a 27-point win, Mike and Rudy still have questions.

Should De'Aaron Fox be coming off the bench? Is Julian Champagnie better suited as a sixth man or a starter? Why isn't Terrace Reed getting more meaningful minutes? And what happens to Carter Bryant when this roster gets healthy?

The Spurs improve to 2-2, but figuring out this lineup might be the biggest challenge of the early season.

Mike and Rudy finally get to celebrate a convincing Spurs victory on a postgame show!

San Antonio controls the matchup, builds a comfortable lead, and never gives Sacramento much of a chance.

The Spurs improve to 2-2, and the guys are happy to see a complete performance after the early-season frustrations against Oklahoma City and Houston.

Rudy points out that blowouts like this serve a purpose beyond the final score.

Mitch Johnson gets to experiment with lineups, evaluate different combinations, and give important players some rest before the next game.

And with the Spurs traveling to Utah immediately afterward, that rest matters.

2. JULIAN CHAMPAGNIE CATCHES FIRE FROM THREE

Julian Champagnie is the story of the night.

He knocks down eight of his 13 three-point attempts and gives the Spurs a massive offensive spark off the bench.

Mike and Rudy remember watching Champagnie's 11-three-pointer performance against the New York Knicks on New Year's Eve.

They believe he might have put up even bigger numbers against Sacramento if the game had remained competitive.

But the bigger conversation is about his role.

Champagnie has been adjusting to coming off the bench after spending time as a starter.

If he can consistently provide instant offense as a reserve, Mike believes he could become a major piece of the Spurs' second unit.

Rudy isn't convinced the current starting lineup is settled, though.

He still sees reasons to put Champagnie back with the starters.

3. WEMBY DOMINATES WITHOUT DOING TOO MUCH

Victor Wembanyama is terrific against Sacramento.

He controls the paint, finishes lobs, creates offensive opportunities, and makes life miserable for the Kings defensively.

But Rudy notices something particularly important.

Wemby isn't jumping at every shot fake.

Instead, he's staying disciplined, using his height and positioning, and forcing opponents to shoot over him.

Mike compares some of that defensive positioning to Tim Duncan.

The guys agree Wembanyama doesn't need to chase spectacular blocks on every possession.

Sometimes standing tall and playing smart defense is more effective.

And after a few rough outings, the hosts remind everybody that one bad game shouldn't become a referendum on Wemby's entire career.

4. SHOULD DE'AARON FOX COME OFF THE BENCH?

Rudy makes one of the night's biggest arguments.

He believes De'Aaron Fox could be more valuable to the Spurs as a sixth man.

Not because Fox isn't talented.

Not because Fox isn't worth his contract.

But because the starting lineup has too many players competing for the same offensive opportunities.

Rudy points out that Fox attempted only six shots against Houston and 11 against both Dallas and Sacramento.

He believes a player with Fox's speed, scoring ability, and offensive skill set should be getting more opportunities.

Coming off the bench could give Fox the ball more often and allow him to control the offense without competing for touches with Dylan Harper, Stephon Castle, and Wembanyama.

Mike notices that when Champagnie got hot against Sacramento, Mitch Johnson took Fox off the floor rather than Harper.

It's only one game, but the guys believe it's worth watching.

Could Fox eventually become one of the NBA's most dangerous sixth men?

5. TERRACE REED IS MAKING HIS CASE

The Terrace Reed conversation isn't going away.

Mike and Rudy love the rookie's energy, physicality, rebounding, and willingness to compete.

Reed grabs five rebounds in just five minutes against Sacramento.

And the guys want more.

Mike believes Reed is already showing that he can contribute at the NBA level.

Rudy argues that if the Spurs want to trust Reed during the playoffs, they need to give him meaningful regular-season experience now.

Both hosts question why Luke Kornet continues receiving minutes while Reed is making such a strong impression.

They aren't calling Reed an All-Star.

They just believe he's earned a real opportunity.

6. WHAT IS LUKE KORNET'S ROLE?

Luke Kornet plays 17 minutes against the Kings, but Mike and Rudy remain concerned about his production.

Rudy recalls how valuable Kornet looked during parts of last season, while also questioning his impact during the playoffs.

His argument is simple.

If Reed can provide more energy and physicality, why not start developing him now?

Mike agrees that Reed could eventually eat into Kornet's playing time.

But both acknowledge that the season is young and the coaching staff is still evaluating its options.

7. MITCH JOHNSON HAS A ROTATION PUZZLE

The Spurs have talent.

They also have a crowded roster.

Mike and Rudy discuss how Mitch Johnson is trying to balance Wembanyama, Fox, Harper, Castle, Champagnie, Keldon Johnson, Harrison Barnes, Luke Kornet, and the younger players.

And there are still questions about how the rotation changes when other players return.

Mike describes the early season as almost an extension of training camp.

The team is trying to figure out which combinations work, which players should start, and who provides the best offense off the bench.

Rudy says he still hasn't seen the three-guard lineup establish a consistent rhythm against quality competition.

The Sacramento blowout was encouraging, but it didn't answer every question.

8. WHAT SHOULD THE SPURS DO WITH CARTER BRYANT?

There simply aren't enough minutes available for everybody.

Rudy even floats the idea of trading Bryant if the Spurs cannot give him the playing time necessary to develop.

Mike believes Bryant's confidence may already be suffering from his limited opportunities.

Neither host wants to give up on the rookie's talent.

They just don't want to see his development stall while he sits on the bench.

9. SPURS HEAD TO UTAH FOR A BACK-TO-BACK

The Spurs don't have much time to celebrate.

They're headed to Salt Lake City to face the Utah Jazz tomorrow night.

Mike and Rudy discuss Utah's injury situation, including reported issues involving Jaren Jackson Jr. and Lauri Markkanen.

They also note that Utah is dealing with its own schedule challenges.

With the Spurs coming off a comfortable victory, the guys like the opportunity to build momentum.

But they want to see the same discipline and effort on the second night of a back-to-back.

10. NBA INJURY NEWS AND THE UPCOMING SCHEDULE

The guys discuss reported injury absences involving Kawhi Leonard and Anthony Edwards.

Rudy is particularly disappointed about the possibility of missing Edwards when Minnesota visits San Antonio.

He also questions whether Edwards should have addressed his knee issues during the offseason.

The discussion turns to the challenges of keeping star players healthy and how much control teams have over athletes determined to keep playing.

The crew also discusses its upcoming Spurs postgame coverage, with another show planned after the Utah matchup.

Victor Wembanyama dominates without forcing things, Julian Champagnie catches fire, and San Antonio takes care of business against a struggling Sacramento team.

But Mike Taylor and Rudy Jay aren't ready to declare the rotation fixed.

De'Aaron Fox's role remains a major question, Terrace Reed keeps making a case for more minutes, and Mitch Johnson still has plenty of decisions to make.

The Spurs are 2-2.
