Protect and Serve

In the line of fire - Standing up against corruption and organised crime in Victoria. - Sir Ken Jones

Listen Later

In an interview with the ‘Protect and Serve’ podcast Sir Ken Jones, a former Chief Constable and President of the UK Association of Chief Police Officers talks about his time as Deputy Commissioner of Victoria Police in southern Australia.

Sir Ken tells listeners his fascinating inside story of police corruption, the murder in custody of renowned criminal Carl Williams, and his struggle uncovering police wrongdoing regarding ‘supergrass’ Nicola Gobbo, formerly known as ‘Lawyer X’.

But doing ‘the right thing’ can come at enormous personal risk. Sir Ken received death threats for his work exposing wrongdoing… his wife was followed, his phone was tapped, and whilst walking around ‘The Tan’ in Melbourne a rifle laser sight was shone on his chest.

Ending up carrying a firearm 24/7 whilst his family were given an armed protective security detail Sir Ken feared being ‘fitted up’ by corrupt cops and eventually left Australia for his, and his family’s safety, whilst striving to get fellow senior leaders to act upon his concerns.

Sir Ken’s story is an alarming tale of the challenges and risks that can be faced by police leaders fighting to root out corruption and criminality within their own force. He reflects on how personal loyalty to the Chief and ‘the force’ can get in the way of doing the right thing.
