In John 3:1–21, Nicodemus, a Pharisee, comes to Jesus at night seeking understanding, and Jesus tells him that no one can see the kingdom of God unless they are born again—born of water and the Spirit. Jesus explains that this new birth is the work of the Spirit and reveals that God’s great love for the world is shown in sending His Son so that whoever believes in Him will not perish but have eternal life. The passage concludes by contrasting those who come to the light through faith with those who remain in darkness because they reject the truth.
