At Caesarea Philippi, Peter confesses that Jesus is the Christ. Jesus then foretells His suffering, rejection, death, and resurrection, rebuking Peter when he resists the idea of a suffering Messiah. He teaches that true discipleship requires self-denial, taking up one’s cross, and following Him. Gaining the whole world is worthless if one forfeits the soul, and allegiance to Christ now determines honor or shame when He comes in His Father’s glory.
