In 1 Thessalonians 4, Paul teaches that not only does the Holy Spirit empower us to overcome temptation but also empowers us to love. The love of God has been poured out within our hearts through the Holy Spirit. Because of the Holy Spirit pouring out love in our hearts, we are taught how to love. We are called to love one another the way a family loves each another. Now we are called to love each other no matter what. Love each other in spite of our sin. Love requires faithfulness, commitment, and sacrifice while expecting nothing in return. As we learn how to love and allow the Holy Spirit to empower us to love, we see the three ways Paul points out how to love and then why we should love. When a Christian loves the way that God has called us to love, it is appealing to people, even to a lost world.
