On the podcast this time, Steven and Sean are confronting some really tough family secrets in the 2010 film from Denis Villeneuve, Incendies.
Uuuuuuuugh, I had no idea this film was going to be so crushing when I suggested that it go on our episode index. I thought, Hey, it’s a Denis Villeneuve film and we’ve done pretty much everything he’s done. We should totally do this one. Round out the collection, you know?
But I didn’t know, friend. I didn’t know just how overwhelming and powerful this one was going to be. On the one hand, that’s good. The twist towards the end was made all the better because I had no idea what we were in for. On the other hand, my heart and spirit just might not recover.
This is like how I felt after watching that other punch-you-in-the-gut film, Capernaum. Did I think that movie would make for a good conversation? Sure, and it did. Did I know that I would feel lost and hopeless for a long time after those credits rolled? Not really.
Not to this extent anyway.
I don’t want to sound like I’m disparaging this film, though. It’s a fantastic mystery film about a daughter and son who are tasked with discovering the truth about their father and how they came into the world. We also follow their mother’s journey to find the young child she had to give up when she was much younger.
The intertwining timelines work well together. They show family of different generations embarking on tough, sometimes dangerous quests to find what they’ve lost or who they are. It’s worth a watch, but don’t say we didn’t warn you about that ending…
