Independence Day
Nations are institutions governed by men. Nations rise and fall, rulers get replaced, and governments as well as political parties change. However, the Sovereign God, who is from everlasting to everlasting, has always been. If He decides to exercise His dominion over a nation, He can raise it up to great power, or He can overthrow it and bring it to ruin. God is Sovereign over the nations.
Jeremiah 18:1-10 – Just as a potter has power over clay, God is sovereign over the nations.
Throughout the Scripture, God’s hand can be seen in the rise and fall of many of the great world powers. Egypt, Assyria, Babylon, Israel, and many other nations are mentioned in the Bible, and through a study of the Scriptures, God’s sovereignty can be observed. Even since the writing of the Bible, over the past 2,000 years, many events recorded in history clearly show the hand of God upon a nation.
The means we use to change our nation is to change the people in our nation. How? With a message of true independence, freedom, and liberty – the gospel message of deliverance.
Colossians 1:13
We have been rescued from the domain of darkness and transferred to the Kingdom of God.
Hebrews 2:14-15 – Jesus freed us from the power of death. That was the beginning of our liberation from this world.
Romans 8:18-21 – We have been freed, but death still stings today. However, there is a day coming when we will be completely free, truly set at liberty!
Philippians 3:20 – Our conversation – literally “our citizenship” – is in heaven. We look for the coming of our Lord Jesus, when he comes down from the right hand of God to establish the Kingdom on earth. That is our “true” Independence Day!
So, if that is our true citizenship, what about the country we live in? How should we conduct our lives in relation to living, working, and dwelling in a nation here on earth?
Luke 4:16-21; Matthew 28:18-20 – We are to bring this message of liberty to the nations of the world and set the captives free! We are to bring this independence to the world!
1 Peter 2:9-17
As strangers and aliens abstain from fleshly lust. Be of “excellent” behavior. Our lives should be exemplary! When they behold your good works, they will glorify your Father in heaven (Mt 5:13-16). Submit. Serve. Honor. (1 Timothy 2:1-2 – Pray for those in authority.) We are not to run and hide our light under a bushel, but we are to let it shine.
Philippians 1:12-27 – The Apostle Paul let his light shine in the Roman Empire. Strive together for the faith of the Gospel! (Philippians 4:21-22 – Paul reached Caesar’s household.)
Let your light shine and bring liberty to our nation and the peoples of this world.
