India Hate Lab's "Report 2024: Hate Speech Events in India" documents a surge in hate speech incidents targeting religious minorities, particularly Muslims, in India. The report highlights a 74.4% increase in such events compared to 2023, frequently instigated by the ruling BJP party and Hindu nationalist organizations. Much of the hate speech is connected to political events and elections, with national leaders playing a key role in propagating communal rhetoric, which is amplified by social media. The report also finds that dangerous speech, which included incitement to violence and calls for the destruction of places of worship, increased significantly, and that social media platforms are slow to act on the issue. The rise in hate speech events normalizes violence against minorities and is contributing to the increasingly extreme assertion of Hindu nationalism.
