What happens when ambition outgrows the environment around you?
In this episode of Almost Pro, we sit down with Malhar Atre — a national level swimmer from India whose journey through swimming, cycling, water polo and sport management has taken him from elite competition to the organisational side of sport.
Growing up in India, Malhar experienced both the passion and challenges of pursuing high performance sport in a system with limited pathways and support outside major sports like cricket. From representing Maharashtra in water polo to winning national titles in open water swimming, his story highlights the realities many athletes face when talent alone isn’t enough.
Now based in Australia and studying Sport Management at Deakin University, Malhar is pursuing a future dedicated to improving sporting systems, athlete pathways and opportunities for the next generation.
This conversation explores:
• India vs Australia sporting culture
• The hidden realities of elite sport
• Athlete identity and transition
• Grassroots development and opportunity
• Moving from athlete to sport organiser
• And finding new ways to stay connected to the dream
