The BCCI had announced a 20 man team that is set to travel to England for the World Test Championship final between India and New Zealand followed by the test series against the England Team. Although there were no surprises in the composition of the Indian team, the duration of the tour and the amount of time that the players would have to remain in a bio bubble had certainly raised a few eyebrows.
The BCCI announced a 3-month tour itinerary, where the Indian team would start with an 8-day quarantine in India following which they will fly to England in a chartered flight and then remain in quarantine for another 10 days. This will be followed by a strict bio bubble that cannot be breached until the end of the tour. The players will be allowed to train once they reach England as they will technically have been in isolation for the past 10 days. No training will be allowed during the initial quarantine in India.
Keeping in mind the extended period that the players will be in the bio bubble, the BCCI has also announced that the players will be allowed to take their wives along for the tour, provided the wives also consent to follow the strict protocol that will be in place. This seemed to be a compassionate decision on the part of the BCCI who are usually accused of putting their players through a heavy workload and a packed international schedule every year.
Although some sports fans have alluded to the fact that as professional sportsmen, staying away from their families is part of the job, there has been no major voices raised from either the host country or the opposition team.
However, our sources within the BCCI have informed us that a group of players have written a letter requesting the BCCI to revoke the decision to allow players to bring their family along.
It is believed that out of the 20 players who have been selected to travel to England, 9 players have written to the BCCI to reconsider the rule that allows cricketers to take their wives along with them on the tour. Interestingly, only 3 players out of the 20 selected are unmarried. This means that only Rishabh Pant, Shubman Gill and Shardul Thakur will be travelling without their significant other during this tour.
