In 1999, CCS cleared a 30-year submarine construction plan in which 24 Submarines were to be inducted into the Indian Navy by 2030. After a long delay, a contract was concluded with Mazagon Docks Ltd to construct 6 submarines in collaboration with Naval Group, France. Termed as Project 75 these Scorpene submarines started joining the Indian Navy in 2017. 3 Submarines have joined the force to date and 3 more shall be joining soon.
In Jun 2021, the DAC headed by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh has cleared another proposal to construct 6 more conventional submarines under the Strategic Partnership Model.
