This Indigenous People's Day, Cat Brooks speaks to Corrina Gould and Christopher Oakes about indigenous village sites around the Bay Area and the spiritual, social, and legal issues that emerge out of European colonialism in the US. They discuss the Ohlone history in the Bay Area, colonial destruction to sacred shell mounds and the current activism against developers seeking control over native sites.

During the second hour Rachel Heaton, a Muckleshoot Tribal Member of the Muckleshoot Nation in Washington State. Rachel speaks with Cat Brooks about ongoing efforts in the wake of NoDAPL. Rachel is a member of the Seattle NoDAPL Coalition 'Mazaska Talks' that led the successful efforts to divest the City of Seattle from Wells Fargo.

Brian Tiekert speaks with John Curl, Author of Indigenous People's Day: A Handbook for Activists and Documentary History, about the local history of the first Indigenous People's Day, its first celebration in Berkeley California, and the push to replace a celebration of violent settler colonialism with a day that recognizes the first and primary occupants of what is now America.

Corrina Gould is Ohlone from the Confederated Villages of Lisjan. She is the co-founder and a lead organizer for Indian People Organizing for Change [1], a small Native run group that works on Indigenous peoples’ issues.

Christopher Oakes is Choctaw from the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma. Chris works with Indian People Organizing for Change and Sogorea TeLand Trust. He was part of the group that occupied the Sogorea Te' cillage site in Vallejo for 109 days in 2011. He also works to protect sacred sites and the rights of Indian tribes.
