Influencing Property Developers to Consider Micro Mobility w/ Diana Schoder

Listen Later

Imagine living in an apartment where access to a car or a scooter was provided as an amenity? Like a gym or coffee in the lobby. The perks of residence could someday include a scooter. Diana Schoder came on the Commute Podcast to talk about the Urban Land Institute’s recent Micro Mobility and Real Estate Study. You can read the report here: https://americas.uli.org/micromobility/ Diana shared some of the insights and highlights from the report. The study was done in partnership with Bloomberg Philanthropies American Cities Climate Challenge. Diana’s perspective on micro-mobility gave me some ideas about how different business models for usage and ownership were still to be determined. I think there are a lot of challenges with the free-floating scooter model. We talked about what it will take for micro-mobility modes to become a serious option for commuters. I think there is a seasonality in many parts of the world that make micro-mobility a ‘some days’ mode. But it reinforces my belief that mobility memberships that include a mix of options will be essential for changing behaviors away from the car. Diana talked about the sequential order of innovation. Before companies will even listen to proposals for how to be a bike-friendly workplace, they need to see that the community has taken steps to be bike-friendly first. Protected bike paths, like in Miami, are a first step in making a city more usable for eBikes or scooters. This episode will give you some insights into how mobility can work as an amenity for property developers or urban planners. As corridors take hold in cities, creating spaces for charging, storing, and finding will become an important part of new mobility hubs.
