inside a $1 downlight - novel circuit twist

Listen Later

Not just a dollar for the light - but including shipping too. I guess that it has pretty much the same materials as a bulb, but in an easier to ship package.

This is one of those new era lights where you can't actually change the bulb. So when it fails (probably within a year) you will have to actually remove and disconnect the fitting completely, and then install a new one of the same size. This increases the risk of home electrical accidents for less technically inclined people who can't afford a huge call out fee to "change a bulb".

It's worth mentioning that the case is metal, but not grounded. So it may become live in the event of a failed LED tracking and burning through the PCBs insulating layer.

The use of a single current sense resistor means that hacking the light to run at lower power is not easy, due to the PCB being a heatsink, making changing the resistor harder.

The circuitry is simple, but also a bit weird in an interesting way. The classic linear regulator has been used as a two-wire device in the middle of the series LED array.

This light came from AliExpress (not a sponsor):-

Note that this particular version is for 220V to 240V use.
They have them in 7W to 18W and in cold or warm white.
