inside a FAKE WiFi repeater

Listen Later

It took a while, but I finally found a fake repeater on eBay. It looks the part and has the obligatory blue LED, but when plugged in, no network will appear as it does with real repeaters.

For the technically non inclined they will probably just see the blue LED lit and assume that the unit is now buffering all the WiFi signals in the vicinity. The positive feedback varied from glowingly enthusiastic to complaining that it "Doesn't increase the range much - but what do you expect for the price."

One negative feedback stating it was a fake had added to their negative feedback to say the seller had offered a refund if they removed the negative feedback.

I've noticed that fake products often have very bad circuitry design. Probably because the people making them don't have the intelligence to make real products. In this case they are greatly overdriving the LED.

For reference, a real unit will appear on your computer's list of networks, and allow you to configure it when you connect to it. At least the fake one poses a low security risk.
