Inside a recalled MK "essentials" socket

Listen Later

Initially I thought these sockets had double pole switches, and the issue was arc flash between the live and neutral switch metalwork, but it appears to be a different issue. (If there actually IS an issue.)

You can find the recall information at this link:-

Other bodies are implying that it poses a serious fire risk, but I would expect the plastic to be self extinguishing, and a contact-flash does not automatically indicate a fire hazard.

The internal construction actually looks OK. While the switch contacts are quite small, they do have a generous distance when open. I wonder if the issue is people seeing a visible flash from the switch through the plastic case? With many modern electronic power supplies you can get quite a spark due to high inrush current to the primary side capacitor when first powered.

It would be interesting to see one that has failed in the dramatic manner implied by the recall notice.

Visually the internal design has no obvious flaws at first glance. I wonder what the full story is - could it be an overzealous recall?
