A look inside a vintage massager that may be in the region of 75 years old. The white plastic has gone very brittle and was easy to damage, so if you have one of these and decide to open it, take care not to tighten the screws too much in case the case cracks. You'll also have to be very careful to release the tension on the vibratory control knob by unscrewing it until it reaches its limit before opening the case.
Devices like this have the very odd history of being one of the first electrical appliances. And from the Victorian era onwards, they have always been sold as "health" devices. In reality they were often used for recreational use.
The electrical construction of this one is a simple transformer-like C-core with a central plunger and a flat plate that is attracted by the sides of the core. I don't think it's a solenoid as such.
Compared to the modern reciprocating massage units, this one is much less forceful and has a much faster (100Hz) vibration.
