Inside “Computing Legacies”: Dr. Peter Krapp on Simulation, Memory, and Digital Culture

Listen Later

Dr. Peter Krapp, a Professor of Film & Media Studies at the University of California, Irvine, where he is also affiliated with the Departments of English and Music in the Claire Trevor School of the Arts, explores key insights from his acclaimed book Computing Legacies: Digital Cultures of Simulation.
In this episode, he reflects on how pre-internet systems, computer museums, emulation, technostalgia, game audio, and simulations in education, management, and security together illuminate what he calls our “computing legacies.” From alternative networking histories and fragile digital memory to state surveillance in virtual worlds and the institutional biases embedded in simulation games, Dr. Krapp shows how today’s digital cultures are shaped by long, often overlooked histories of technology, power, and play.
