    Dr. Benjamin Hofmann is a group leader at the USYS Transdisciplinarity Lab at ETH Zurich. His research focuses on science–society relations and climate change adaptation.
    Shiila Infriccioli is a doctoral researcher at the USYS Transdisciplinarity Lab. As part of the UPSCALE project, she works at the interface of forest science, digital monitoring and forest practice.

    Caroline Wiedmer ist Professorin für Vergleichende Literaturwissenschaft und Kulturwissenschaften an der Franklin in Lugano und promovierte an der Princeton University. Sie ist Autorin und (Mit-)Herausgeberin zahlreicher Bücher und Artikel, die sich mit Fragen der Schnittstellen von Recht, Erzählung und Kultur, des kulturellen Austauschs sowie verschiedener Formen der Nachhaltigkeit befassen.

    Christoph Kueffer ist Professor für Siedlungsökologie an der OST – Fachhochschule Ostschweiz und wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter (Privatdozent) an der ETH Zürich. Er studierte Umweltwissenschaften an der ETH Zürich und promovierte dort in Pflanzenökologie.

  • Between Activism and Analysis: Perspectives on Science, Sustainability, and Academia

    About the Methodology

    From June to September 2024, Sarah Keller conducted 17 semi-structured interviews with early-career researchers across Switzerland—primarily PhDs and postdocs from the natural sciences, social sciences, and interdisciplinary fields. Using purposive and snowball sampling, participants were invited to reflect on how science is evolving in response to pressing societal challenges, and where they see innovation or stagnation within their own academic cultures.

    The open-ended format encouraged honest, in-depth conversations about motivations, struggles, and institutional tensions. This was complemented by literature research and ethnographic research in academic environments such as a workshop series for lecturers concerned with integrating sustainability into teaching curriculum across disciplines.
