In this episode with Mike Sullivan, head coach of the Pittsburgh Penguins, Mike goes into his philosophy of coaching. He breaks down and explains how to coach youth players and how you develop them. He also tells of how there are different ways to coach at the NHL level and a youth team. Brain development is vital to how you approach working with players.

Three things for coaching and teaching;

1. Psychology of working with kids
2. Skills sets
3. Tactical approach

Youth sports is about teaching life lessons and the take away's that kids can use in life. Self-esteem is vital in develop of players. Also, the environment you create for kids is important for success.

Trying to treat kids as mini adults does not work with brain development in kids. There is only so much they can learn at young age. Need to make practice age appropriate. Skills and basics are vital to the success of having kids learn in sports and life.

Teaching them to problem solve is what you need to be teaching kids. Learning to recognize a problem and how to solve it using methods that you have taught them.

Mike also recommends two books if you want to take your game to the next level for coaching kids. "The Playmakers Advantage", by Leonard Zaichkowsky, PhD and Daniel Peterson. "The Talent Code" by Daniel Coyle
