In 1993, King developed his DJ skills chanting on various sound systems. He voiced a number of hits at various studios with several producers in Jamaica and gained a reputation as the youths’ DJ. His vocal style and delivery was similar to Buju Banton, whose gritty delivery over popular rhythms guaranteed a hit. In 1991, Curtis moved to Ocho Rios where he entered a local talent contest alongside DJ Jigsy King. Curtis won the contest as Best Singer and King was designated the winning DJ. Inspired by their victory Barry O’Hare, of Roof International, suggested they record at his studios, which resulted in the successful single, ‘Butterfly’.
