Sleep, just like food, is an essential aspect of life, but what happens when the body can't get enough sleep?

 This week as we discuss Insomnia: The causes, effects and possible solutions, our guest (Dr Olusina) stresses the need for adequate sleep. According to him, an adult is expected to sleep for at least 6-8 hours daily.

He points out that not having enough sleep could lead to hypertension, heart attack etc

Some of the causes of sleep problems include; ageing, alcohol, drug abuse, smoking, stress etc 

To prevent sleep problems, Dr. Olusina advised that before drugs are prescribed, non-medication management like sleep hygiene should be tried first.

 Some of these sleep hygiene includes, not eating late at night, avoiding alcohol and cigarette, televisions should not be in the room, foods that contain stimulants like coffee should be avoided, avoiding bright lights in the room etc. 

While getting enough sleep is important, the time of the day when one sleeps is equally important. According to Dr. Olusina, the night is the best time to sleep. 

So if you have been sleeping more during the day, it is time to make a change. The night is the best time to sleep and sleep is important. 

Give your body a well-deserved rest. Gift your body a good sleep.
