Allison Scholes was a previous guest on The Second Phase Podcast. I interviewed Allison in Episode 24. During that conversation, Allison shared her journey to her second phase and a few Instagram tips.
Allison is a creative who loves to help busy moms create personal brands on Instagram. She believes Instagram is a great tool to build relationships for creating a personal brand.
About AllisonAllison is an Instagram Coach and Podcaster. She helps mompreneurs build their Instagram presence through coaching, creative copy, and content. Allison also hosts her Podcast, Social Media for Mompreneurs. Each week, the show helps busy moms build their brand online in just minutes a day—even when those minutes are hard to come by. Allison believes social media should be fun and easy, not daunting! With her sassy and fun personality, mixed with her creativity and love for sweatpants and coffee, she’s able to deliver the simple and creative tools to help mompreneurs boost their business with confidence and ease.
The PressurePeople often feel pressure regarding how to show up on Instagram, what to post, how to be authentic, and how to not let imposter syndrome or comparison consume them.
Why InstagramWhy should entrepreneurs use Instagram to build a personal brand? Allison believes that you can build relationships much faster on Instagram.
There is so much potential with Instagram. People don’t have to follow so many people or follow a set of rules based on the influencers. It should be used as a tool to build your presence and that is what leads to sales and profits later on.
You have to have intention when getting on Instagram. Those intentions should be about helping and serving others and help your audience by sharing content.
Building connections by helping others then transforms into building relationships which is how we advance in our businesses.
The Number One Question or Struggle When building a Personal Brand on InstagramThe number one problem people have with Instagram is that they don’t know what to post.
What this really means is that they don’t know how to show up because there are so many influencers saying what to do that it is overwhelming.
There are two questions that people struggling often forget to ask:
It’s important to remember that posting has to feel right and it has to reach the ideal audience.
One way to find clarity is to list three things that you want to be known for. Then create content around those three content categories or brand pillars.
It is important to be consistent with your content and to post on a regular basis. Consistency is specific to you. It’s how you define it. It can be three, four, or five days a week. If it becomes forced, it will feel inauthentic.
You control your Instagram content. Instagram doesn’t control you!
Pillars of ContentBrand pillars or content pillars are the categories or topics you want to focus on creating content for. Use them to create content consistently.
That One Key Thing to Build Your Personal Brand on InstagramShow your face! Your face should be in the first 9 to 12 tiles on Instagram at least once, if not twice. The important thing is to show up, if you don’t have perfectly curated photos, no big deal. Post anyway because it’s important to show up and show your real self so that your ideal audience can relate to you.
It’s fine to show up messy!
Personal branding photos are awesome, but it’s OK to not always have professional photos in your newsfeed.
Remember, people are following you for the content and value you are giving them. Your Instagram feed is about the people who follow you, not about you. Make your content about them, not about yourself!
Instagram Tips for a Great BioMake the bio about your ideal audience. It isn’t a business card. People want to know what you are going to provide when they follow you.
In the name field, have at least your first name and your title, what you do.
Directly underneath that, have your brand message or “I help” statement. Identify who you help, what their main pain point is, and what is your solution for them.
Also, include a link to your website or your business Facebook page or lead magnet.
Instagram Tips for VideoShow up on video in your stories first. Instagram stories is the number one spot for being noticed.
Share a quick tip, a quick story, show your personality.
Record outside of the platform. Use your phone and record a video and put the video in the app “In Shot” to trim the video down to 15 seconds for reel or one to two minutes for IGTV.
Use IGTV to teach in two to three steps. When talking to your phone camera, talk to one person, not a mass audience. Say what you have to say and then upload the video to IGTV.
Instagram will allow you to upload a 1-minute video to stories and then break the video down to 15 second intervals and you can add your gifs, captions, etc. Cut Story is another app that edits videos and will clip a 1-minute video to 15 seconds.
Direct Messages on InstagramWhat is the etiquette for DMs? The best way to start a one on one conversation is to comment on stories. Build a relationship first before you start talking about yourself or your products or services. Don’t become an ad. Invite people you engage with to join your Facebook Group.
Another tip is to include posts in your stories about your lead magnets.
