The problem is that we are not conscious of the fact that it is the mind that is to be handled. A seeker has to integrate mind’s own products and reactions. Any kind of a spiritual seeking and a spiritual effort will be an effort to look into the mind and make its reactions uniform, without swinging between likes and dislikes, loss and gain etc.
