America's first female journalist landed her big story by catching the President of the United States skinny dipping in the Potomac River; and holding his clothes for ransom until he answered her questions.  Anne Newport Royall paved the way so modern-day female journalists like Therese Apel could stand on their own, break away from mainstream media and start her own online news outlet, Dark Horse Press.
