to learn more about Black history month, running, diversity, and inclusion.

Robert Cathey is currently Vice President of Global Analytics Solutions and Chief Data Officer at VSP Vision. He holds an MBA from Sacramento State University and a B.S. in Business Management from the University of Phoenix. Robert was inspired to run by his wife, Nadine. He began running in 2018 at age 54 and developed a passion for the sport. He completed his first marathon (CIM) in 2019. He leads the Sacramento chapter of Black Men Run (BMR), a national organization with the mission of improving health outcomes through running.

Yared Negussie works for Oracle inc as a senior production support analyst.  He holds a bachelor's in information technology and will complete his MBA in December 2023. Yared started “seriously” running around 2014 when obtaining his first-degree taekwondo blackbelt.

Robert and Yared have the following insights to share:

  • Educating others and explaining black culture and experiences.
  •  Sacramento Black Men Run is a supportive local running organization, where everyone is welcome. The national organization has the mission of improving health outcomes through running. The organization transcends running and is a social movement.

On this Seeds of Sunshine episode:

  •  We discuss the importance of diversity and inclusion in the workplace, as well as in running. We also discuss Alison Desir’s book Running While Black.
  • We talk about microaggressions.
  • Avoid generalizations and stereotypes.
  • We also talk about intersectionality, which means that as black persons, Robert and Yared don’t represent all black people.
  • And last, but not least, seeking to understand people without judgment is crucial.

And Carmen’s rap song, which she composed and performed:

 “Yo, Yo, Sacramento

Let black history month

and every month

be the time to prove and improve

On racial equality

No more hypocrisy, brutality, or fatality

When in reality

We can’t be lame in our blame

Race ain’t no game

since we’re essentially the same.

Yo, yo, Sacramento!”
