Introducing Matthew Katz, CEO and co-founder of Caldera, a "rollup as a service" company. Caldera is focused on scaling #blockchain infrastructure, specifically rollups for #Ethereum.

Early #Crypto Interest: Matt became involved with Bitcoin at the age of 12, buying #Bitcoin in 2011-2012 when it was only worth a few hundred dollars. His early interest stemmed from online communities and a fascination with programmable money.

Background in #Software Development: Matt’s background includes full-stack development, building open-source tools for microfinance institutions, and participation in hackathons. He later focused on software development during his time at Stanford.

Realization of Ethereum's Limitations: During his exposure to blockchain technology, Matt recognized the limitations of Ethereum’s scalability. This led him to start Caldera in 2022 to provide scalable solutions via rollups.

Learning Programming: Matt’s first programming language was Python, which he learned during high school and university, especially because it was the most popular language for startups at the time.

Transition to Infrastructure: Matt shares how his interest shifted from consumer-facing applications like games to backend infrastructure, which led him to focus on developing tools for builders and developers in the blockchain space.

Challenges of Leading as a Technical CEO: As a technical CEO, Matt faces the challenge of balancing between overseeing the technical side and running the business. He credits his CTO, Parker, for handling the technical planning and execution, allowing Matt to focus on high-level strategies.

Surprises in the CEO Role: One of the biggest surprises for Matt was the different ways people think and work across departments. Managing expectations and navigating differing mental models has been a significant learning curve.
