INTERVIEW: Section 27 together with the Centre for
Child Law have launched The Michael Komape
Sanitation Progress Monitor to track progress made
by the Limpopo Education Department to eliminate
unsafe and undignified toilets in Limpopo schools.
The tool is named after the five-year-old learner,
Michael Komape, who drowned in a pit toilet at his
school in Limpopo in 2014. The most recent case is
that of Langalam Viki, the four-year-old learner

whose lifeless body was discovered in a pit toilet in a
public school in the Eastern Cape on 7 March 2023.
