John has been involved in his passion for a particular dance, Argentine Tango for 20 years. He is an accomplished dancer and highly respected by his peers from his Teaching of Tango and DJing at Milongas (the tango social dances) throughout Scotland.
He talked about how Tango developed in Aberdeen and evolved into the now ‘Tango Aberdeen’ dance community.
John has had a colourful and vast array of creative activities he has been involved in over many years. He was involved in the first Scottish Snowboarding championship in the 1980’s. He has made and sold jewellery. He can juggle and walk on stilts. He was involved in paragliding for many years until he had some accidents and he decided to hang up his metaphorical paragliding wings. He was still dancing tango at this time however. He has visited Buenos Aires the home of tango 12 times and has gained much teaching knowledge and awareness and love of the culture from these visits.
John was an art psychotherapist for many years. Discussions around several areas of mental health were broached and specifically the realism of the human condition and that “we are all imperfect” and just doing our best. He is now retired and is enjoying his retirement disgracefully by embracing the sport of Kayaking with zeal and enthusiasm and is still involved with his main passion tango dancing and teaching this in Aberdeen.
