SHOW NOTES

Julia’s Background

-Currently the CEO of the Art of Feminine Selling as well as the Chapter President of the NAWSP (National Association of Women Sales Professionals), Julia’s second language is English and she began in sales as a teen selling cutlery door-to-door in order to help her family buy food after they immigrated to the United States.

-After a sale she began making small talk with the couple and the husband handed over his business card, offering her a job at Merrill Lynch.

Discrimination and Learning

-The man who had offered Julia the job had mentioned that he normally would never hire a community college student, let alone someone who had never attended college, however a lot more can be learned by hustling and going out trying to sell than in the university classroom.

-Sales culture might be hyper-competitive, but people love sharing their knowledge, it’s okay to ask for help and even rip off and duplicate what’s working for someone else.

Drive and Determination

-Julia considers herself lucky because of the desperation and need to succeed in sales because nothing else was then competing for her attention and she could focus solely on achieving at work.

-The top people in every field aren’t just the most talented, those people have the balance of talent and hard-work.

Failure

-There are times to make sure everyone is taking things seriously, but it’s extremely important to remind people that sales isn’t such a risk and if you mess up, it’ll all be okay. They’re not going to remember, you’re not going to remember, just keep moving forward.

-Growth comes out of doing what you’re afraid of and the first time doing anything is usually the scariest, but rest assured the more you do something the more competent and confident you’ll become so just dive in.

-When you’ve just started the stakes are low because no one’s really watching you and no one expects much because you haven’t built up a reputation, so fail while it’s still low risk.
