I am so happy today to share an interview I did with my very own uncle, Keenan Dakota. For about 35 years, Keenan has lived on Twin Oaks Intentional Community in Louisa, Virginia. Founded in 1967, Twin Oaks one of the oldest and most well-established income-sharing communities in the United States. Keenan is one of the longest-serving members there, and has been interviewed about Twin Oaks for CNN, the Washington Post, and ABC News.
In our interview, Keenan shares what life is like at Twin Oaks. He dispels some common misperceptions about intentional communities like Twin Oaks, and shares his perspective on how Twin Oaks members have created a utopian, alternative lifestyle that is a dream for many.
For many people who are seeking a better way of living, away from our consumer-driven capitalistic society, sharing resources, food and livelihoods like this might be an ideal solution. I hope you find this interview, as I did, to be illuminating, thought-provoking and inspiring.
