[1] The Essenes, also known as ‘the children of light’, were members of a Jewish esoteric, mystical religious sect, that flourished in Palestine from the 2nd century BCE to the 1st century CE. They lived a monastic existence and thoughsome communities were celibate it is known that others were not. However, all espoused poverty, donated their property to the community and adhered to a strict rule of discipline. It is generally believed that the Dead Sea Scrolls found in 1947 in the caves at Khirbet Qumran, constituted a part of theirlibrary, as they were hidden in close proximity to one of their major community centres.
