The Host Artist: Austin Holm
The Bar – Unit 26 Army Navy Airforce Bar
Kicking Things Off with a Trip to the Local
We start things off with a twist; me in the guest seat and Austin Holm playing host.
I wanted Austin to join us for this intro as he’ll be co-hosting some episodes. And because he’s one of my favourite humans.
Totally paraphrased:
AH: Tell us why you started this podcast?
CM: Because I love podcasts! And I do a lot of international art residencies. One of my favourite parts is sharing living and work space with other artists from all over the world. At the end of the day when the brushes are cleaned and put away the conversation always gets interesting; this cross pollination of ideas and creativity. I want to share that experience with other artists or people who are contemplating creative careers, like a smorgasbord of examples for following your creative dream and making a living out of it.
AH: What can we expect from a typical episode?
CM: Interviews with artists of all types: painters, printmakers, film makers, singer/songwriter recording artists, anyone doing something cool and making a living at it. We’ll talk over drinks in a bar about what they’re doing and what inspires them, the challenges they’ve faced and how they’ve come through it.
AH: Since you’ll be doing the heavy lifting/interviewing, tell us now about what you do.
CM: I’m a working artist, painter/printmaker. I do big cityscapes, some up to 8’ long. I do some teaching, leading workshops, instructing at a university here in Vancouver, and I teach art on cruise ships all over the world. I love it. Because I’m doing cityscapes I have a constant hunger for new cities. I’m always propelling myself out there, absorbing the feeling of a place, and responding to it on canvas or print.
It’s been a total pleasure to be able to do this. That’s another reason I wanted to do this podcast; the idea of reassuring people that you can create a fun and thriving professional life doing the kinds of crazy things you want to do. That just jazzes me up.
Austin’s awesome closing joke? You’ll have to tune in for that
