In the first chapter of his Gospel, the apostle John talks about Jesus Christ without saying His name until the end of his prologue. Then the apostle describes how some religious leaders demand to know who John the Baptist is. John the Baptist laughs and says, “Well, for sure I’m not the Messiah!” The leaders go down through their pre-determined list of possible identities, only for John the Baptist to say, “No” to each of them.
This string of denials frustrates the religious leaders to no end. Then John the Baptist turns the tables on them. “One name on your list doesn’t belong with the others. No prophet is worthy to be the lowest of servants to the long-promised Messiah.”
The very next day, who walks by? John the Baptist gives Him an ancient, sacred name: “The Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world.” Then John reminds us that God the Father has given Him an even more ancient, sacred name: “The Son of God.”
The day after that? John the Baptist is talking with two of his disciples and then says, “Look, the Lamb of God!” The two men rush to catch up with Jesus and spend a few hours together. It completely changed their lives. A few hours with Jesus can completely change your life, and your friends’ lives, as well.
