Introducing Suzuki Cello School Method for Parents Welcome Pointers For Success Pod-Class 1
hi there everybody welcome to the podcast i'm just going to introduce to parents and um carers the idea of the suzuki method um before we launch into the um the beginning of the project tomorrow we're going to start teaching from book one all the basics so we're going to start really from a clean slate as if the child the student knows absolutely nothing about the cello it's a great place to start from nowhere you can only improve now suzuki is a really successful method of teaching children it's not all i use it's just one of the books and methods that i follow it has some pitfalls which we'll talk about as the course progresses so i try and make allowances for those and i try and um fill in the gaps that i think the suzuki method may have but there are also a lot of really really good things about the suzuki method you will find that the student learns very very quickly your child learns very very quickly most of it most of the success in early playing is based on listening and i'm going to go through the four essential points for teachers and parents presently but i will say that parents starting with the suzuki method really need to understand that they have to be really involved for it to be successful so parents and carers have to be really committed to the growth of the musician what does that mean practically well it means that you come to class or you sit with the podcast when you sit with your child that you're always there and you're always listening and really even if you can't play you become a surrogate teacher when the teacher isn't around with the podcasts um you know you're going to really need to absorb all the instruction as well and what that enables the child to do is to um go to you for tuition even if you don't actually um play the instrument you should know the rules as it were the rules for posture and the rules for uh listening listening etc so this is um one of the factors that creates such a good learning environment is the idea that the parent is as involved in the musical progression as the teacher and the student okay so it's really it's a triangle of activity and personalities that engage and create this wonderful wonderful child musician so i'll just go over the four essential points for teachers and parents so children should listen to the reference recordings every day now i um will be playing them as part of the lessons but um you should really buy the recording so that you can or or you can get them online you can get them on youtube and just play them just uh play over and over again play them over breakfast play them uh in the car it's such a good way actually is in the car you know when you're doing the school run or whatever and bedtime if you've got an alexa you could um sort out a way of you know having them on your alexa um they'll be on amazon music and you can add them things like that and you can pop them on your uh your phone apps and link it up with the tv have you know in the middle of a well there's a program you know if one program goes to another quickly play it so you see there's all sorts of ways you can sneak them in um but sneaking is probably a negative way of looking at things but really um the child needs to be so familiar that uh the the pieces become second nature much in the same way as you know when you learn the lord's prayer or something at school you don't even have to think about it you just know it and this is part of the suzuki method this is what's um so important and so successful um so rapid progress depends on this listening that is ascertained that is in the mantra the suzuki mantra if you like internalization or the product production of a beautiful tone um that's a you know making a lovely sound when the bow is in contact with a string and goes backwards and forwards it's it sounds easy but it's not um and it's one of the difficulties that a lot...
