A derivative is a financial contract that gets its worth from a fundamental asset. 

When using derivatives, the buyer decides to buy a certain asset on a specific day at a specific price. 

Most of the time, derivatives are used for different assets including commodities such as gold and oil.  Currencies are also an asset used with derivatives and mostly the U.S dollar is used.
