Chris Stuart - Tyndale’s Plowboy

Introduction To Judges (1-3)

Listen Later

The central message of this sermon is that the period of the Judges in the Old Testament is a test for the nation of Israel, designed to see if they can function as a theocracy under God's direct rule without human institutions like kingship. The Israelites repeatedly fail this test by disobeying God and turning to idolatry, leading to their oppression by other nations. Despite having a group of leaders known as judges who are tasked with governing and leading the people spiritually, Israel ultimately rejects God's direct rule and demands a king like all the surrounding nations, which is seen as a compromise and a desire to blend in rather than be different. This rejection of God's unique plan for them is seen as a sin, but one that God will ultimately accommodate. The takeaway from this sermon is that the Israelites' inability to trust and follow God's direct leadership leads to their own downfall, and serves as a cautionary tale for Christians today about the importance of remaining faithful to God's plan and not compromising with the world.
