Introduction to Justin Martyr's Dialogue with Trypho

Listen Later

The question is no longer whether Christianity can survive in the Roman world—it’s whether it truly fulfills the promises of Israel. In today’s reading from Dialogue with Trypho, Justin Martyr shifts from defending the faith to pressing it inward, engaging a thoughtful Jewish interlocutor on the meaning of Scripture itself. This is not a speech but a sustained debate, where the Law, the Prophets, and the Psalms are brought forward again and again to answer one central question: if the Scriptures are true, who is Jesus? What emerges is an early, raw, and sometimes uncomfortable attempt to define the relationship between the Church and Israel—one that forces us to wrestle with how the Old Testament is read in light of Christ and whether that claim can actually stand.
