If you have a 64 GB iPad, you might not be too concerned about it. But a 16 GB iPad can fill up fast. Music, video and pictures can fill up your device quicker than you want. Of course, you have the apps that can also fill up your iPad. Some apps take up over a gigabyte on your iPad – you have to dedicate a good deal of space if you use these apps.

I’m going through some of the applications that can fill your iPad.

First, let’s put this in perspective. I went through a series of apps and came to the conclusion the average app is around 20-30 MB. Facebook’s iPad app is 17.5 MB. Evernote is 19.6 MB. There are many apps from games, to productivity that are around the 20-30 MB mark.

I categorize apps in 2 classes:

* Total space iPad apps (Garageband, games like Monopoly) – The full app is downloaded to the iPad. You can use this app without internet access.

* Cloud apps (Facebook, Twitter) – These are applications that require an internet connection to work.

There are Hybrid apps like Evernote that cache on the iPad, then sync to the cloud. There are also apps that take up more space than the disk size because you are adding files as you go – pictures, text, etc.

Apple iLife App Hogs

Lets start with the Apple-made applications.

* iPhoto – the photo sharing site – will take up 113 MB.

* Pages, the web page builder, takes up 269 MB.

* Numbers, a spreadsheet app – 283 MB

* iMovie – 403 MB

And the largest Apple app I found was Garageband. 803 MB. Of course, all these apps create files on your computer. Therefore, these apps will only get bigger with the information you create on the app.

Other notable App Hogs

I went through a lot of other applications, but really was not finding too many with larger file sizes. Even Autodesk programs were respectable sizes. A couple notables, though. The program 123D Sculpt (which I reviewed a couple months ago), take up 123 MB (ironic, eh?). The Photo Cookbook is a cookbook with recipes inside. Since there are many recipes, the application ran up to 403 MB.

The Category Whose Apps Take Up the Most Space: Games

Of course, games have to compete with those on XBox, PS3, Wii and PC. Their graphics and sounds can fill up an iPad fast. When I reviewed Magic: the Gathering, I noticed a lot of unnecessary video that could have knocked it down from the 999 MB install.

However, that’s not the largest file size app. To put in perspective, an online Zynga game like Dream Pethouse take up 18.9 MB on you iPad. This is an app you need internet connection to play. But these apps dont:

* Monopoly HD takes up 211 MB (If you purchase the non-HD version, it only takes up 31.1 MB)

* Madden NFL 2012 – The famous football game will take 352 MB on your iPad

* Real Racing 2 – 444  MB for this racing game

* Dungeon Hunter 2 – 467 MB

Many games between 100-900 MB in size. However, here are some games that take over 999 MB:

* Infinity Blade II – an Unreal Engine 3 game – 1.03 GB (double the size of the original game)

* Modern Combat 3 – Popular first-shooter game – 1.09 GB

* Asphalt 7 – Racing car game for all iOS de...
