iPhone 18 Pro: Six Key Features and Innovations

Listen Later

The upcoming iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max, expected to launch in September 2026, are poised to introduce significant hardware and design upgrades.Design and Display The new models will retain the 6.3-inch and 6.9-inch screen sizes but will utilize more power-efficient LTPO+ displays. A major design change is the reduction of the Dynamic Island, which could be 25 to 30 percent smaller. This is achieved by hiding the Face ID infrared illuminator entirely beneath the screen using laser micro-drilling technology. On the back, the devices will feature a unified finish that seamlessly blends the frosted glass and aluminum, eliminating the previous two-tone look. Apple is also expected to introduce a new "Deep Red" or "Dark Cherry" color option, alongside Light Blue, Dark Gray, and Silver.Camera System One of the most notable upgrades is the introduction of a variable aperture on the 48MP main camera, a first for iPhones. This technology physically moves the aperture blades to control the amount of light entering the sensor, offering better depth-of-field control and improved exposure across different lighting conditions. The telephoto camera is also expected to receive a wider aperture. Additionally, the dedicated Camera Control button will be simplified by removing touch and swipe gestures, relying purely on pressure sensitivity for a more streamlined user experience.Performance and Connectivity Powering the devices will be the new A20 Pro chip, manufactured using a cutting-edge 2nm process. This chip will utilize Wafer-Level Multi-Chip Module (WMCM) packaging, allowing for more efficient integration of the CPU, GPU, and DRAM, which will significantly optimize performance and energy consumption. Connectivity will be enhanced by Apple's third-generation in-house C2 cellular modem, offering better 5G performance and enabling web browsing via satellite without a standard Wi-Fi or cellular connection. The devices will also feature a next-generation N2 chip for improved Wi-Fi and Bluetooth capabilities.Battery and Charging Battery life is expected to see a major leap, with the Pro Max model reportedly surpassing the 5,000 mAh threshold, potentially reaching 5,100 to 5,200 mAh. Combined with the 30% improved energy efficiency of the A20 Pro chip, the iPhone 18 Pro Max could achieve up to two days of battery life. The standard Pro model is also expected to feature a larger 4,100 to 4,250 mAh battery. Wired charging speeds may increase to 45W, allowing the battery to reach a 50% charge in around 20 minutes.Software Enhancements The new hardware will be complemented by iOS 27, which is expected to expand Apple's AI capabilities through customized AI models and a more conversational Siri. A new Siri-powered camera mode will allow users to point their camera at objects to instantly identify them, search for details, or track nutritional information in real time.
