Liam Brady, Steve Heighway, Frank Stapleton, Ronnie Whelan, David O'Leary... Ireland's squad for the 1982 World Cup campaign under Eoin Hand was undoubtedly the greatest collection of players the country has ever put together... or so say us! Managed by Eoin Hand, the Republic entered a group of death with European Championship runners up Belgium, the dying embers of the Total Football Dutch team and a French team being powered by Platini. Despite these trials, the Republic narrowly missed out on qualification on goal difference... GOAL DIFFERENCE! More egregiously, we lost a match away to Belgium in which (a) an Irish goal was disallowed for no reason (b) the Beglians scored from a very dubiously awarded free kick and (c) the referee couldn't explain his decisions even twenty years after the fact. Hmmm... Join Conor and Johnny as they discuss Ireland's greatest World Cup team that never was and the scandals surrounding this campaign.
