This research paper examines the impact of generative AI (GenAI) on critical thinking among knowledge workers. The authors surveyed 319 participants, gathering 936 real-world examples of GenAI use in their work. The study found that higher confidence in GenAI tools is associated with less critical thinking, while higher self-confidence correlates with more critical thinking. GenAI tools appear to reduce the cognitive effort required for some tasks, shifting focus from information gathering to verification and from execution to stewardship.
The paper suggests design implications for GenAI tools to enhance users' awareness, motivation, and ability to think critically. Ultimately, this research highlights the need for a balanced approach that leverages GenAI's efficiency while maintaining and promoting independent critical thinking skills.
