Can Jew Believe?

Is Antisemitism An American Tradition?

Listen Later

In this episode of "Can Jew Believe? With Brad Pomerance," Brad is joined by American University Professor and Author Pamela S. Nadell.  We delve into the complex history of antisemitism in the United States, exploring its roots and persistence as an American tradition. We discuss the provocative title of her book, "Antisemitism, An American Tradition," and its implications.  The conversation spans from the early Jewish settlements in New Amsterdam in 1654, through the infamous blood libels in the 1800s, including the Damascus Affair and the Civil War era's General Orders Number 11, issued by future American President Ulysses S. Grant.  We also examine the canards surrounding Jewish Americans, including the false narratives of Jewish non-participation in the Civil War.  Join us as we look to unravel the dichotomy between the overall success of Jewish Americans and the enduring challenges of antisemitism that they have faced throughout American history.

** This is a two-part episode. Be sure to tune in Part 2!
