Only two cricketers made Time Magazine's list of the 100 most influential people in sport. That small number raised a harder question: if cricket carries so little global influence, what do we make of the claim that it's the world's second largest sport? Cricket administrators have repeated that claim for years, and it has settled into received wisdom without anyone seriously checking whether the data backs it up.

I've run an analysis of that claim, measuring cricket against its rivals using the metrics that actually matter. Cricket's intensity inside its core markets, particularly the Indian subcontinent, is real and arguably unmatched. But intensity inside a geography is not the same as scale across geographies, and those two things have been quietly conflated for a long time.

The results of that analysis are coming soon, and they are worth paying attention to. Whether cricket truly ranks second in the world, or whether that is a story the sport has told itself, is a question worth answering with evidence rather than assumption.
