The Psalter was compiled, most likely, when God’s people returned from Exile – remember Daniel being left in Babylon? It was probably compiled as the community songbook to remind God’s mob of who they are, and who they serve (that is why Psalms 1 and 2 serve so clearly as the introduction). And Psalm 119 is the longest Psalm.

It was sung every year to remember Pentecost – the festival 50 days after the Exodus, celebrating God giving his word to his mob at Mt Sinai. And at the heart of Psalm 119 is this word of God – and it is good.

Composed as an acrostic, the Psalm covers, as one commentator says, ‘the A-Z of God’s word’. And in todays’ chunk, God’s word is eternal and God’s word is the sweetest thing!
