Overview: If you find yourself struggling with doubt, you are not the first. Out of all of the surprising people to have doubts about the identity of Christ, was the very herald who introduced Jesus to Israel and the world. he hears about all of the miracles, but Jesus, the king, is apparently not yet crowned. John knew he himself would be a critical figure in God's glorious plan of salvation. He even preached repentance in anticipation of the coming of Christ--the Christ who would judge the world with fire. He could see this happening. Yet after riding this wave of passion, he is imprisoned and it just doesn't seem that the kingdom is coming anymore. John could see the Word of God, and he could see appearances. The two didn't seem to match. A very similar struggle can consume Christians today. Maybe it has consumed you. You are asking crucial questions, as was John. Jesus, in reply to John, doesn't explain it all. He simply encourages him to look. Look at what is happening. Moreover, Jesus doesn't actually deliver John from prison or beheading, even though Zachariah had preached that Jesus would bring release for captives from prison. Doubt is to be overcome by simply trusting what we do already know about God rather than by insisting on understanding everything. Doubt comes from a wrong interpretation of reality, that creates wrong expectations. Come home in peace to Jesus, in whose capable hands every detail of history lies secure forever.
