Perspective can be a funny thing. It can taint one’s view of a situation. And it can cause vital facts to be thrown out. Biases are common to the human experience. Everyone, even the greatest of ministers, approach the Word with their own biases. We do not come to Scripture neutrally, as though we can dissect a text without involving our personalities, experiences, and context. I cannot help but look at [the text] with my heart and my mind. We cannot afford to simply approach the text with our overly-biased opinions. To start with one’s own opinions first and then look for a text to support them, causes us to read into Scripture, overlook vital facts that reveal truth, and cling to interpretations that present truth only as we see it or believe it to be. Rather than reading with the intent of supporting one’s presuppositions, we should approach God’s Word with open hearts and minds and allow the Holy Spirit to make God’s Word alive and clear. The result might be surprising…
