"Megalopolis" is a science fiction film with classical roots. It was made with crazy decisions, frequently setting cheesy performances against rich visual flourishes. When one takes a step back and looks at the film's whole arc, it is simultaneously amazing and perplexing, with a very conventional plot. But the thrill of Coppola's crazy vision is what makes this movie more than a narrative. Even this long after it was first conceived, the project seems like the proper time for something that is obviously very personal. Dreamers and visionaries are the only ones who matter when societies flourish and fall. The idea that art would endure when our modern Rome burns is almost consoling. This is usually where the story takes a turn for the better.
