Is Ozempic Insulin?

Listen Later

Is Ozempic insulin?

Ozempic is not insulin. Ozempic (semaglutide) is a GLP-1 receptor agonist used to treat type 2 diabetes and, in some cases, support weight management under medical supervision. In this episode, we explain how it works and how it differs from insulin therapy in Europe.

In this episode, we cover:

• What insulin is (a hormone that lowers blood glucose directly)

• What Ozempic is (a glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonist)

• How GLP-1 medicines increase insulin release in a glucose-dependent way

• Effects on appetite and gastric emptying

• When insulin therapy is required instead

• Common side effects: nausea, gastrointestinal symptoms

• Cardiovascular outcome data and risk assessment

• When blood tests and monitoring are necessary

• Situations where prescription requests may be declined

Doctors assess HbA1c, fasting glucose, BMI, kidney function, cardiovascular risk, pancreatitis history, and current medications before prescribing. Ozempic is not suitable for type 1 diabetes. Severe abdominal pain, persistent vomiting, or symptoms of hypoglycaemia require medical evaluation.

This episode reflects how diabetes and metabolic treatments are reviewed within structured medical assessment in European telemedicine at Mobi Doctor.
